The Life That Almost Took Me
He was heavy in my arms, dead weight, a man who, for once, didn't fight back with his words.
The silence around us was sharp, loud even.
It's over, I thought. Was that relief I just felt?
Three years of trying to save a man who was determined to disappear into his drug fuelled secret second life with another woman, and here he was, blue, lifeless, foam at the mouth, slipping somewhere I couldn't follow.
The world narrowed to that moment, to the sound of my own heartbeat and the distant voice of the paramedic speaking words that no longer reached me.
And just as something inside me finally broke open, finally let go, he gasped.
A violent pull of air back into his body, eyes snapping open. Not soft, not grateful, but something darker, something I knew too well.
And in that breath, I realised - it wasn't over. It was beginning again.
This is not just a story about heartbreak. It is a story about survival,
about the moments that almost break you, and the fearless decision to
come back to yourself anyway.
This is for anyone who has loved someone deeply, and lost them to drug
addiction, and is ready to reclaim who they are. This is for the
version of me that needed this during the most horrifying time in my
life. Thank you for being here 💜
