If you say you don’t care what people think, I don’t believe you….

In my humbles, one of the greatest misconceptions in life is that healing, or even simply growing older, somehow requires us to stop caring what other people think.

As though the pinnacle of emotional maturity is becoming completely unaffected by the opinions of those around us. I do not believe that is true, nor do I think it is desirable.

It literally disconnects you from your heart. Yuck.

To care is to be human. It is the very quality that allows us to love deeply, to experience compassion, to notice suffering, to repair relationships when we have caused harm and to feel joy when those we love succeed. If we genuinely became immune to the thoughts, feelings and experiences of everyone around us, we would lose far more than our insecurity, we would lose a vital part of our humanity.

The problem, therefore, has never been that we care. The problem is that we have become indiscriminate about whose voices we allow to shape the way we see ourselves. We often hand the loudest opinions the greatest authority without ever asking whether those people have demonstrated the wisdom, integrity or emotional maturity to deserve such influence in the first place.

Every person you encounter interprets your life through the lens of their own experiences, beliefs, wounds, fears and limitations. Their opinion is rarely an objective reflection of who you are. More often, it is a reflection of who they are, what they value and what they have the capacity to understand. When you recognise this, you begin to realise that seeking universal approval is not only impossible, but also deeply misaligned with living authentically.

I don’t believe that the question has never been “how” to stop caring what people think. I believe the more valuable question is whose perspective has genuinely earned the privilege of influencing the way you think about yourself. The answer to that question is almost always a much smaller circle than we imagine. Much smaller.

I have found that the people whose opinions deserve consideration are those who consistently demonstrate honesty without cruelty, kindness without performance, humility without self-deprecation and the courage to tell me the truth because they care about my growth rather than their comfort. Those are the voices capable of refining me without diminishing me.

Living with integrity inevitably means that there will be people who misunderstand you, disagree with you or simply dislike you.

If your deepest commitment is to being universally accepted, you will eventually abandon parts of yourself in exchange for belonging.

If, however, your deepest commitment is to living in alignment with your values, then approval becomes a pleasant by-product rather than the foundation upon which your identity rests.

Being emotionally detached from the world around you is avoidance; which causes loneliness and bitterness.

If you become discerning enough to know whose opinions deserve your consideration and courageous enough to let the rest pass by without allowing them to redefine who you are, you’ve found the real freedom and balance with this.

And that, is the presence of wisdom, not the absence of care we’re currently being conditioned to believe is right.
